Marilyn's Musings - April, 2006

by Marilyn Smith

April is such an exciting time for us as rose gardeners isn’t it? The gradual warming temperatures tell us spring is underway…and delight us with anticipation of beautiful blooms to come. There’s also Daylight Savings Time – due to begin on April 2nd – that tells us the days are going to grow longer now, thus giving us more time to enjoy the outdoors in our gardens. Before you know it, those gardens are in full bloom and we are reminded of why we enjoy this passion of rose gardening so much!

It is the promise of things to come that I love the most about this time of year…the Easter/Passover holiday and time spent with family around the dinner table, seeing my gardens erupt in shades of every color I think of, walking bare-footed through the soft, lush, emerald green grass in the yard. My favorite passion, however, is going out to my rose garden and seeing that each bloom is more vibrant and the colors more intense than I remember them being the previous year, and realizing that somehow I have forgotten over the months just how fragrant each blossom can be! I encourage each of you to share this passion for growing roses with a friend or neighbor and invite them to our next meeting.  Better yet…buy a year’s membership for them! What a wonderful gift to give someone you care about. Together, we will bring to our corner of the world a beautiful oasis of friendship, laughter, and beautiful roses. See you at the next meeting where we learn how to keep our roses insect-free without destroying “the good bugs”!
